AIPMO—Advisor, Consultant and Expert (ACE) Training Program Certification

AIPMO provides internationally recognized Project Management Officer (PMO) core and specialist certifications including a certification in project leadership. The PMO certifications are based on AIPMO’s PMO Body of Knowledge (BOK) which comprises of the PMO ‘leading standard’ and six other books. The term ‘leading standard’ means the standard is based on a mix of research and expert knowledge that has been tested over a three-year period.

Note: Providing a “leading standard” is a different approach to most associations or institutes that create typically a ‘lagging standard’.

AIPMO’s method in creating the PMO BOK requires academic research findings, access to experts and the active involvement of the course facilitators in testing new concepts, content and ideas. Within the AIPMO courses, at the levels of IPMO-P® and IPMO-E®, are the workshop sections that are typically up to six hours of the five-day course. This is where new concepts, ideas, participant problems etc., are investigated to see they add value and/or resolve a particular issue. For that reason, the course facilitators are required to have multiple competencies i.e. an advisor, a consultant and an expert. The workshop findings are fed back into new exercises, webinar topics and content for future versions of the training materials and BOK. Therefore, the role of the course facilitators is fundamental in the feedback loop of creating a leading standard.

AIPMO is responsible for running these ACE training courses to ensure that every AIPMO partner’s course facilitator understands the philosophy behind AIPMO which is underpinned by our international experience of Projects, Programs, Portfolios (PPP) and PMOs. Once certified as an AIPMO Advisor, Consultant and Expert (ACE) trainer, the course facilitator can work for any AIPMO certified partner.

Certified AIPMO ACE trainers have demonstrated their international impact through their track record, reputation, participation on the AIPMO ACE expert training program, exam results and case study.

The ACE trainer course follows the IPMO-E® course outline but will focus more on discussions, workshops and general understanding of the field of PMOs and the ACE environment. The following IPMO-E® course description has been retained to give you context. Since PMOs began to appear in organizations, academic researchers, project management practitioners and their organizations have been asking how to best structure them; what services and the roles and leadership styles should they adopt to provide the maximum value. Until now, there had been little understanding on what basis to structure PMOs with respect to the similarities and differences between the project and operational environments. This may be why less than 33% of PMOs reach the full potential[1] indicating a limited understanding in how PMOs should be defined not only at the project, program and portfolio levels, but also in case of organizational enterprise PMOs, departmental PMOs, divisional PMOs and research PMOs. AIPMO’s experience confirms that there is little to no knowledge on how to design a topology for a networked set of PMOs to address organizational issues irrespective of industry, organization type and size[2]. AIPMO’s council has had a breakthrough which is reflected in all the core certification courses and the upcoming PMO body of knowledge (a series of books). At the expert level, this breakthrough is shown in terms of the AIPMO PMO strategic frameworkTM focused on PMO topologies, PMO service topologies and leadership styles to provide the maximum organizational value. This course brings together the latest in academic research and expert practices from international experts who have also contributed to international standards in the domains of projects, programs, portfolios and PMOs. The course is guided by the recently completed AIPMO master frameworkTM which is an integrated set of frameworks providing attendees the building blocks of projects, programs, portfolios and PMOs. The course covers topics of strategy formulation and execution, success factors, success criteria, PMO topologies, PMO services topologies, assessment of the current PMO setups in terms of SWOT and ultimately a roadmap to strategically design and implement PMO topologies using an integrated approach to ensure PMO alignment with organizational needs. AIPMO’s Body of Knowledge is covered which comprise of a series of books covering PMO Principles, Portfolio, Program and Project Principles, PMO Techniques and Tools, PMO Services and Capabilities, plus references to three other books. As a PMO expert, you will be able to assess and understand why existing PMOs are not performing and how to turn this around with designing and implementing PMO topologies including aligned PMO services topologies. You will know, with the services offered, how to optimize the PMO capabilities within the organizational context. You will also understand how to define and measure PMO performance, PMO Success, PMO Benefits and PMO Value and link these to the latest thinking in PMO principle-based maturity models. In doing so, you will improve individual and collective PMO performance in an organization to achieve maximum business value.   • 10 years’ experience in project, program or portfolio management
  • 2 year plus as a PMO manager/PMO Director
  • IPMO-P® certification, or PMI®[1]‘s PMP®[2] or AXELOS Practitioner levels in MSP®[3], P3O®[4], MoP®[5] or IPMA®[6] (Levels C or higher i.e., B or A)

Pre-requisites (ACE)

  • 10 years’ experience in project, program and portfolio management
  • 5 years’ plus as a PMO manager, a PMO Director or a Consultant
  • International experience and known in the region/country
  • 5 years international ACE training experience; ideally with a professional training organization, a consulting company or a university
  • BSc as a minimum and ideally MSc and/or DBA/PhD
  • Fluent English; other languages ideal
